Alexandra Croitoru: Untitled (Storehouse). 2008, series of 10 C-prints, 35 x 52 cm, edition of 5+2ap

The (re)writing of history, and a continuous (re)production and never ending circulation of meaning and it’s support is contemplated in Alexandra Croitoru’s solo exhibition at Galleri Tom Christoffersen. The project presented consists mainly of photography but also of collage, video and sculpture.

Most works are paper-based and the use of medium refers systematically to writing, transcribing, to manipulation of ideas and exposure of political agendas. A series of photos documents piles of paper, which regardless of content and language, are ready to be recycled into a blank support for further printing – a process reminding us of how easily destroyed or distorted statements are when inserted consciously in a different context.
As in most works by Alexandra Croitoru the investigation is about obtaining and possessing power, about who will be in the position to speak - to conduct the next printing process, so to say. The issue is discussed very specific in the collage and video evolving around the Rumantsch language (spoken in certain areas of Switzerland). Rumantsch is a marginalized language and its practitioners are thereby placed in a minority position in both a numerical and sociological sense.

The exhibition RE- fluctuates on several levels between the tangible paper and the more abstract (re)production of meaning and questioning of power structures. The exhibition’s underlying focus on cyclic processes is explicit by Alexandra Croitoru’s recycling of May’s newspapers into a sculpture. And also in the random - Dada like - cut up and redistribution of press releases from previous exhibitions, which will take place at the opening. We cordially invite you to experience this!
