Marie Søndergaard Lolk

Marie Søndergaard Lolk’s paintings deal with surface and space, often through innumerable layers of paint and an almost sculptural approach to the media.

Some works contain text; as the patiently elevated “Suddenly Speed Sprang To Mind” or simply “Slut I Midten” (The End In The Middle) in which the letters are carved through the accumulated layers in the centre of the work. Other paintings appear as monochromes, compositions of rectangular blocks or even with figural elements. Søndergaard Lolk uses industrial paint, which means that the colours used are mostly those that happen to be at hand – often resulting in a colour scheme of pale, dusty or dark tones.

Despite the diverse experiments all works carry the same minimalist restraint because each painting is made according to a specific set of self-composed rules or guidelines. As an example, these can be based on machinelike and detached repetition, producing a tactile and dense painting, which will function both as documentation of an action and as the result of an idea.

The hybrid works, which are heavy, substantial and time consuming in the widest sense of the words, give Marie Søndergaard Lolk a particular position in Danish contemporary painting. It is a newcomer’s project already making a mark.
